Check homeowner's policy for special vehicles coverage advises Amity Insurance

QUINCY, MA ISSUED January 19,2011….Millions of Americans own special vehicles for recreation and with snowmobile months fast approaching, now is the time to check your homeowner's insurance policy to be sure it provides the coverage needed by owners of special vehicles, according to Amity Insurance Agency, Inc., the region's leading full service agency.

By way of definition, special vehicles include golf carts, all-terrain vehicles, dune buggies, snowmobiles and motorized wheelchairs and scooters. Fortunately, standard homeowner's policies provide some of the coverage users of these vehicles need, but what is not covered is the legal liability that can result from the use of motor vehicles that are registered for use on public roads or property – or that the law requires to be registered for use at the place where an accident occurs.

A standard homeowner's insurance policy will typically cover liability resulting from the use of the following:

  • A motorized wheelchair at the owner's home and surrounding property
  • A dune buggy at a beach house where the owner is renting for a week's time
  • A snowmobile owned by the homeowner and used on vacant land he owns
  • An ATV rented by the homeowner used on someone else's property

Be advised that a homeowner's insurance policy will not cover liability when a special vehicle is involved in an accident at an uninsured location.

Take note that a standard homeowner's insurance policy covers certain vehicles if the insured person uses them solely to service his premises. Case in point is a riding lawn mower; if the insured individual uses the mower on his own property and has an accident, he would have coverage, but not if he uses it to cut a neighbor's lawn.

Since coverage for certain special vehicles is so situation-dependent, individuals who own them should discuss the best way to insure with a professional insurance agent. All motorized vehicles carry a risk of accident, so it is important to have the right insurance protection in place.
